Larry Engel

Larry Engel Larry Engel is co-founder with his brother Steven of Engel Brothers Media Inc., an independent production company in New York City. Larry is a writer, producer, director, and cinematographer with more than 20 years of documentary filmmaking experience. He's been chased by tornadoes and lowered into ice caves, flown into hurricanes, and run from wildfires. He's also gotten lost in jungles, stranded in Antarctica, stuck in quicksand, and come face to face with hundreds of mummies. He likes this planet a lot and loves making movies in the air, on the ground and under water.

Along the way Larry has been honored with a host of nominations and awards including a Daytime Emmy for Best Cinematography for 3-2-1 Contact, a AAAS-Westinghouse Science Journalism Award for excellence in science writing for television for HURRICANE!, and the Mountain Spirit award from Mountainfilm in Telluride for THE HEIGHT OF COURAGE: THE NORMAN VAUGHAN STORY.

Through Engel Brothers Media, he most recently completed COYOTE: AMERICA'S TOP DOG hosted by James Avery, for TOP/NWF and the series Adrenaline Science for TLC and National Geographic Channels. CANNIBALISM IN THE CANYONS, a one-hour film about prehistoric cannibalism among the ancient peoples in the American Southwest was produced for Secrets of the Dead, Channel 4 (UK) and Thirteen/WNET (PBS). He also co-executive produced and shot QUICKSAND, a one-hour film for National Geographic Channels.

THE ULTIMATE VAMPIRE: MOSQUITO was aired on the Discovery Channel. Larry was the co-executive producer and co-writer for the highly rated Thirteen/WNET PBS travel series Going Places. Among his other recent work, Larry was co-director and cinematographer of LOST WARRIORS OF THE CLOUDS, a one-hour Discovery Channel special about an emergency rescue of ancient Peruvian mummies. And he wrote, produced, directed and shot WILDLIFE VET, a one hour film that follows a prominent wildlife veterinarian from California to Zimbabwe for Turner Broadcasting.

Larry was co-producer and principal cinematographer for MYSTERIES OF DEEP SPACE, a three-part astronomy series that aired on PBS; and IMMORTALITY ON ICE, a Discovery channel documentary about the strange world of cryonics for which he was also the co-director and co-writer. In addition, Larry produced and filmed the highly acclaimed Antarctic adventure, HEIGHT OF COURAGE: THE NORMAN VAUGHAN STORY, for National Geographic Television. He co-wrote, co-produced, co-directed and shot several of NOVA's best-known programs including TORNADO!, HURRICANE!, DIVING FOR PIRATE GOLD, and GOD, DARWIN AND THE DINOSAURS.

He's a member of the Writers Guild of America East, the Explorers Club, and the National Association of Science Writers. Mountaineering, mountain biking, scuba diving and skiing are among his favorite outdoor activities. Larry also finds time to teach. He's an adjunct professor of film at Columbia University's acclaimed film division in the School of the Arts. There he teaches history and theory courses at the undergraduate level along with directing workshops at the graduate level.

Larry lives with his spouse Carolyn Moore on a small farm in the mid-Hudson Valley of New York where they tend to horses, goats, dogs, cats, geese, ducks, chickens, and a llama. They are also wildlife rehabilitators. Antarctica is his favorite continent; it reminds him that he's a guest on the planet.
