William Murphy
William T. Murphy is a well known expert in the field of moving image
archives, with a particular emphasis on historical materials useful for
television production and humanities research. Retired from the government,
he worked for the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) for
more than 30 years, managing its extensive audiovisual holdings and
developing audiovisual records management guidance for the entire federal
establishment. He is the author of Robert Flaherty (G.K. Hall and Co.) and
Television and Video Preservation 1997: A Report on the Current State of
American Television Preservation, 5 vols., published by the Library of
Congress. He served as NARA's representative to the International Federation
of Film Archives (FIAF), 1988-1999. He was elected founding president of the
Association of Moving Image Archivists (AMIA), which presented him its
"Silver Light" career achievement award. He is also a recipient of the
International Documentary Association's Preservation and Scholarship Award.
He is now an independent consultant for audiovisual archives and libraries
and for producers of documentary history programs for television.
