Bryan Smith
Bryan Smith a multi-faceted production executive and veteran television host, serves as the Senior Vice President, Production for National Geographic Channel International (NGCI). Serving in this newly created post since August 1, 2000, Smith is relocated to the global documentary network's Washington, D.C. headquarters.
In his newly created position, Smith is responsible for oversight of all National Geographic Channel's international commissions, co-productions and presales. Smith originally joined NGCI in 1997 as General Manager of the National Geographic Channel's Australian outlet, responsible for overall management of the channel operation, including programming and acquisitions, affiliate and advertising sales, and marketing.
Most recently, Smith served as the Director of Production and On-Air for National Geographic Channel International's European ventures in London.
Originally a veterinary surgeon, Smith made the move into television production over 20 years ago. In 1982, Smith joined Australian Broadcasting Corporation's prestigious documentary unit, A Big Country, as a senior reporter, garnering vast experience in developing and producing high-quality documentary productions. Widely recognized as a host and producer of "Beyond 2000," an entertaining science and technology program seen in some 90 countries around the globe, Smith also authored Desperately Seeking Screentime -- The Australian Guide to a Career in Television, published in 1994. He formed his own production company, A Digital Direction, in the mid 90's producing a variety of projects for both domestic Australian and international television outlets while also pioneering the docusoap format. Smith has also devised and taught courses on interviewing techniques and writing for television for the Australian Film and Television School. Awarded a Commonwealth Relations Fellowship to study UK television production techniques, Smith earned a Masters degree in General Studies and majored in Documentary Television from the University of New South Wales.
