David A. Grant
David Grant founded Fox Television Studios (FtvS) in late 1997 as an independent division of the Fox Entertainment Group. FtvS' mission was to create a new type of studio: one that built a stable of smaller entrepreneurial production boutiques (or "pods"). These "pods" create premium content for a wide variety of broadcast, cable and satellite platforms worldwide, as well as a diverse mix of product in addition to traditional prime-time scripted series. In less than four years, FtvS has become one of the leading suppliers of prime time series, producing over 400 hours of television programming annually. Its programming has already garnered multiple Emmy awards and is distributed throughout the world. Mr. Grant created the concept for FtvS with News Corp and FEG President and COO Peter Chernin, to whom he reports.
Mr. Grant oversees central operations of eight production units overall, including Regency Television (a joint venture with New Regency), The Greenblatt-Janollari Studio, FtvS Productions, Fox TV Pictures, Foxstar, Natural History New Zealand, Fox World and the Fox Foundry. These entities service five primary programming and content genres ranging from: (1) scripted primetime series, movies and miniseries, (2) alternative reality programs and new creative formats, (3) premium non-fiction series and specials, (4) international co-production and format adaptations, to (5) digital content and interactive convergence extensions. Together, the FtvS entities have grown and now rank among television's most prolific and diverse producers. The breadth of productions include six major broadcast network series, ten cable and satellite series, and a consistent slate of major movies and miniseries with nine currently in production for fall 2000 and beyond.
FtvS broadcast network series range from FOX hits "Malcolm in the Middle" and "The Bernie Mac Show" to CBS's "The Education of Max Bickford," NBC's "UC: Undercover" and UPN's third-season hit "Roswell" and "The Hughleys." Its cable and satellite operations are responsible for, among other top original series, "Biography" (A&E)," "The Shield (FX)," "Son of the Beach" (FX)," Emmy-winning "Twisted Tales" and "Shark Gordon" (Animal Planet), "Backstory" (AMC) and "History vs. Hollywood" (The History Channel). FtvS regularly supplies major movies and miniseries ranging from "World War III" (FOX) and "The Glow" to "Deliberate Intent," "A Glimpse of Hell" and the critically acclaimed "Sins of the Father" (FX). It has still other major programming at leading services including Discovery Channel, Discovery Health, National Geographic Channel, The Learning Channel, Sci-Fi Channel and PBS, among several others.
Before starting FtvS, Mr. Grant served as Chief Operating Officer at TELE-TV, the digital programming and interactive television consortium begun in 1995 by Regional Bell Operating Companies Bell Atlantic, NYNEX and Pacific Telesis Group. While there, Mr. Grant served as a principal architect of the telephone companies' digital television strategies, including the development and creation of interactive program guides (IPGs), program carriage agreements and related Internet and other interactive content services.
He joined TELE-TV in 1995 after serving as Executive Vice President, Network Business Operations for FOX Broadcasting Company since 1991, where he played a major strategic and operational role in the fourth network's growth into a full seven-night service. While at FOX, Mr. Grant was involved in securing the network's ground-breaking NFL agreement (1994), and oversaw the network's business, legal, standards & practices and other related operational units.
He joined FOX after serving as Senior Vice President, Twentieth Century Fox Film Corporation. While there, he was instrumental in helping to launch BSkyB in the U.K., acquiring Asia's STAR-TV, restructuring Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment and securing film output deals with HBO and others on behalf of the major film studio.
Mr. Grant was graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science from the University of California, Los Angeles, and earned his Juris Doctor degree from University of California, Davis, where he was also Executive Editor of the Law Review. He is a Los Angeles native and current resident, along with his wife Nancy and three children.
