Bryan Smith
Bryan Smith, a multifaceted production executive and veteran television host, is Executive Vice President of Programming and Production for National Geographic Channels International. He is responsible for oversight of all NGCI's international commissions, co-productions, presales, and acquisitions. He is based at the global documentary network's Washington, D.C. headquarters.
Smith originally joined NGCI in 1997 as General Manager of the National Geographic Channel's Australian outlet, responsible for overall management of the channel operation, including programming and acquisitions, affiliate and advertising sales and marketing. Most recently, Smith served as the Director of Production and On-Air for National Geographic Channels International's European ventures in London. In this position he developed and launched a brand new channel "Adventure One" - the first subset of the National Geographic brand. After a year as Senior Vice President of Production in Washington, Smith has been given all responsibility for programming and production of National Geographic Channels International in 134 countries, and promoted to Executive Vice President.
Originally a veterinary surgeon, Smith made the move into television production more than 20 years ago. In 1982, he joined Australian Broadcasting Corporation's prestigious documentary unit, A Big Country, as a senior reporter, garnering vast experience in developing and producing high-quality documentary productions. Widely recognized as a host and producer of "Beyond 2000," an entertaining science and technology program seen in some 90 countries around the globe, Smith also authored Desperately Seeking Screentime ¾ The Australian Guide to a Career in Television, published in 1994. He formed his own production company, A Digital Direction, in the mid-90s, producing a variety of projects for both domestic Australian and international television outlets, while also pioneering the docusoap format. Smith has devised and taught courses on interviewing techniques and writing for television for the Australian Film and Television School. Awarded a Commonwealth Relations Fellowship to study television production techniques in the United Kingdom, Smith earned a Master's degree in General Studies, majoring in Documentary Television, from the University of New South Wales.
