Anatomy of a Hit Program: Behind the Scenes of What Not to Wear
Abigail Harvey started up the US production arm of the BBC's Documentary and Contemporary Factual Department in New York in 2002. The office currently makes over 150 hours of primetime television for Discovery Communications Inc including What Not to Wear for TLC.
Born in the UK, Harvey has a degree in Economics and Social Policy from London University. She joined BBC World Service Radio after college making arts programmes and then moved into television. She won a place on a BBC Trainee Directors Scheme in the Educational Programming Department and made documentaries on subjects as varied as art, geography and sex! She was nominated for a BAFTA as Director of Best Children's Documentary in 1994 for Postive Black Soul, which presented positive images of Africa through the eyes of a Senegalese rap group.
After leaving the BBC for a spell as Senior Producer in charge of original programming for the Sci-Fi Channel UK Harvey returned to the BBC's Features Department as a Producer / Director on BBC1's live prime time consumer magazine show Watchdog. As a Series Producer within the department she made primetime 'lifestyle' shows for both BBC1 and BBC2 including the popular gardening shows Charlie's Garden Army and Small Town Gardens and was in charge of the live week long coverage of the annual Chelsea Flower Show. She was the Series Producer of the motoring show Top Gear's spin-off Wrong Car, Right Car which was nominated for a Royal Television Society Midlands Award in the Best Factual Entertainment category.
Harvey started up the BBC production office in New York initially to make the home renovation show While You Were Out for TLC which was nominated for an Emmy. The office expanded to make Perfect Partner for Discovery and Pros and Cons for TLC. As Executive Producer, she heads up a team of over 100 production staff currently make 5 shows for DCI including What Not to Wear for TLC which is in its 3rd season.
